Aurangabad, officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023, is the base most travellers use for the rock-cut caves of Ajanta and Ellora, both on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The railway station took the new name in October 2025 with the code CPSN, although plenty of signs and conversations still use the old one. Within the city, the Mughal-era Bibi Ka Maqbara and the Panchakki water mill are the best-known monuments. Ellora, about 30 km north-west, has 34 Buddhist, Hindu and Jain caves side by side, among them Cave 16, the Kailasa temple, hewn downward out of a single mass of rock.
Saptashrungi Gad is a hill shrine in Kalwan taluka of Nashik district, about 60 km from Nashik, reached by State Highway 17 off the Mumbai-Agra highway near the villages of Vani and Nanduri. The name means seven peaks, and the goddess Saptashrungi Nivasini is believed to dwell among them. Her temple is regarded as the ardha, or half, peetha in the Maharashtra grouping of three and a half Shakti shrines. The image of the goddess is carved into a rock face inside a cave on the upper level of the temple, and it has eighteen arms, each holding a weapon such as a trishul or a chakra.
