Nashik sits on the banks of the Godavari in northern Maharashtra, a pilgrimage halt and a market town for far longer than it has been an industrial city. The river rises a short drive west at Trimbakeshwar, and the ghats at Ramkund in the old quarter are where that water is first put to ceremonial use. Every twelfth year the Simhastha Kumbh Mela brings pilgrims to those ghats and to Trimbakeshwar in numbers that reshape the city for weeks. The rest of the time Nashik is quieter than its reputation suggests: vineyards on the Gangapur side, onion and grape markets in the talukas around it, and the Mumbai road dropping away through the ghats to the south-west.
Pune Airport is at Lohegaon, roughly 11 km north-east of the old city centre, and works as a civil enclave on the western side of the Lohegaon Air Force Station, so civilian flights share the runway with the Indian Air Force. A new terminal building opened for flights in July 2024, four months after it was inaugurated.
