Igatpuri is a railway town in Nashik district at the top of the Western Ghats, around 588 metres above sea level and about 137 km from Mumbai on the Central Railway line to Nashik. It is best known as the home of Dhamma Giri, the Vipassana International Academy, which held its first ten-day course in 1976 and has become one of the largest Vipassana meditation centres in the world. Dhamma Giri is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the station, and its Myanmar Gate, a showpiece of Buddhist architecture, is a landmark even for those not joining a course.
Nashik sits on the banks of the Godavari in northern Maharashtra, a pilgrimage halt and a market town for far longer than it has been an industrial city. The river rises a short drive west at Trimbakeshwar, and the ghats at Ramkund in the old quarter are where that water is first put to ceremonial use. Every twelfth year the Simhastha Kumbh Mela brings pilgrims to those ghats and to Trimbakeshwar in numbers that reshape the city for weeks. The rest of the time Nashik is quieter than its reputation suggests: vineyards on the Gangapur side, onion and grape markets in the talukas around it, and the Mumbai road dropping away through the ghats to the south-west.
