Old Goa holds the Churches and Convents of Goa, inscribed by UNESCO in 1986. Its best-known building, the Basilica of Bom Jesus, built between 1594 and 1605, keeps the remains of St Francis Xavier, the missionary who was based in Goa in the 1540s, and is regarded as a leading example of Portuguese colonial...
Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is a dense harbour city on the Arabian Sea coast. Its southern part was once seven islands, merged by land reclamation over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the Fort precinct still holds the city's grand Victorian civic buildings. The suburbs extend north across Salsette island, so a journey between the two ends is measured in neighbourhoods and traffic rather than kilometres. Three UNESCO World Heritage listings are within reach of south Mumbai. Boats from the Gateway of India take about an hour to cross the harbour to Elephanta Island, where cave temples dedicated to Shiva are cut into the rock; the ferries do not run on Mondays.
