Mahabaleshwar is a hill station on a broad plateau of the Sahyadri range in Satara district, and its highest viewpoint, Wilson Point, reaches 1,439 metres. The British developed it as the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency. Old Mahabaleshwar, one of the villages that make up the town, is a place of pilgrimage because the Krishna and several of its tributaries are believed to rise there. Pune Airport is at Lohegaon, roughly 11 km north-east of the old city centre, and works as a civil enclave on the western side of the Lohegaon Air Force Station, so civilian flights share the runway with the Indian Air Force.
