Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is a dense harbour city on the Arabian Sea coast. Jejuri is a temple town in Pune district, about 50 km from Pune, built around the hilltop shrine of Khandoba, a form of Shiva worshipped widely across Maharashtra. Clouds of turmeric, called bhandara, thrown during festivals cover the temple, the steps and the devotees in yellow, which is why the town is known as Sonyachi Jejuri, golden Jejuri. Muslims as well as Hindus have worshipped at the shrine for generations. The main temple, Gad Kot, sits within stone fortifications on the Jejurigad hill, and devotees climb a few hundred uneven steps lined with arches and tall lamp pillars, the deepmalas, to reach it.
