Nagpur is the second capital of Maharashtra, where the state legislature holds its winter session every year, and the main commercial centre of the Vidarbha region. The British regarded it as the centre of India, and the Zero Mile Stone, built in 1907 during the Great Trigonometrical Survey, still marks that idea in the middle of the city. The Orange City nickname comes from the oranges grown across the surrounding districts and traded here. Deekshabhoomi is where Dr B. R. Ambedkar embraced Buddhism with several lakh followers on 14 October 1956, and its large hollow stupa draws visitors through the year; the anniversary, Dhammachakra Pravartan Din, is marked there annually.
Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah I in 1411 beside the Sabarmati river, and in July 2017 its walled city became the first Indian city inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic core is made of pols, gated residential streets with bird feeders, wells and small shrines, packed closely together. Around that old centre, a far larger modern city has spread across both banks of the river. Gandhi moved his ashram to the Sabarmati in June 1917, and on 12 March 1930 he left it on the Salt March to Dandi; the site is now a national monument.
