Nashik's airport is at Ozar, about 20 km north-east of the city centre and around 19 km from Nashik Road railway station. The airfield belongs to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which built it in 1964 when its Nashik aircraft division began licensed production of the MiG-21FL fighter. HAL still uses it to develop, test and build military aircraft, and civilian passengers use a terminal that was inaugurated in March 2014. Ozar lies on the Mumbai-Agra highway, and widening of that road cut the drive into Nashik to roughly 15 to 20 minutes. That puts the city's sights within easy reach after landing: the ghats and temples of Panchavati, the wineries west of town, and Trimbakeshwar further out.
Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah I in 1411 beside the Sabarmati river, and in July 2017 its walled city became the first Indian city inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic core is made of pols, gated residential streets with bird feeders, wells and small shrines, packed closely together. Around that old centre, a far larger modern city has spread across both banks of the river. Gandhi moved his ashram to the Sabarmati in June 1917, and on 12 March 1930 he left it on the Salt March to Dandi; the site is now a national monument.
