Pune Airport is at Lohegaon, roughly 11 km north-east of the old city centre, and works as a civil enclave on the western side of the Lohegaon Air Force Station, so civilian flights share the runway with the Indian Air Force. Shirdi is a pilgrimage town in Rahata taluka of Ahilyanagar district, the district formerly called Ahmednagar, and almost everything in it turns on Sai Baba, the saint who lived here until his death on 15 October 1918. His devotees come from Hindu and Muslim backgrounds alike, and over the past century a small village has grown into a town arranged around the temple complex and the lodges and shops that serve its visitors. The Samadhi Mandir, built over the spot where Sai Baba's body was laid to rest, is the focus of worship. A short walk away, Dwarkamai is the mosque he lived in; its dhuni, a fire kept burning, is the source of the udi ash given to devotees.
