Pune lies on the Deccan plateau at the meeting of the Mula and the Mutha, close enough to Mumbai to be reached in a morning and far enough from it to feel like a different city rather than a suburb. Igatpuri is a railway town in Nashik district at the top of the Western Ghats, around 588 metres above sea level and about 137 km from Mumbai on the Central Railway line to Nashik. It is best known as the home of Dhamma Giri, the Vipassana International Academy, which held its first ten-day course in 1976 and has become one of the largest Vipassana meditation centres in the world. Dhamma Giri is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the station, and its Myanmar Gate, a showpiece of Buddhist architecture, is a landmark even for those not joining a course.
