Shirdi is a pilgrimage town in Rahata taluka of Ahilyanagar district, the district formerly called Ahmednagar, and almost everything in it turns on Sai Baba, the saint who lived here until his death on 15 October 1918. His devotees come from Hindu and Muslim backgrounds alike, and over the past century a small village has grown into a town arranged around the temple complex and the lodges and shops that serve its visitors. The Samadhi Mandir, built over the spot where Sai Baba's body was laid to rest, is the focus of worship. A short walk away, Dwarkamai is the mosque he lived in; its dhuni, a fire kept burning, is the source of the udi ash given to devotees.
Bhimashankar is a village deep in the Sahyadri range in Pune district, known for its temple of Shiva, which holds one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The Bhima river, which is called the Chandrabhaga by the time it reaches Pandharpur, is said to rise here. The forest around it is protected as the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, an evergreen tract spread across the Ambegaon and Khed talukas. Darshan at the Jyotirlinga is the main reason most people come, but the sanctuary deserves time too. It was created chiefly to protect the Indian giant squirrel, the shekru, Maharashtra's state animal, and a forest department survey estimated between about 1,300 and 1,700 of them, with more than 10,000 active nests.
