Trimbak, the small town around the Trimbakeshwar temple, lies in Nashik district at the foot of the Brahmagiri hills, where Hindu belief places the source of the Godavari. The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. Pilgrims travel from all over India for the rituals performed here, and priests keep genealogy registers in which families from across the country have recorded their visits for generations. Kushavarta, a stone tank built in 1750 with natural springs feeding it, is revered as the spot where the Godavari reappears after vanishing into Brahmagiri, and pilgrims bathe there before darshan. Paths climb Brahmagiri for views across the valley, and the neighbouring Anjaneri hill is named after Anjana, mother of Hanuman.
Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is a dense harbour city on the Arabian Sea coast. Its southern part was once seven islands, merged by land reclamation over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the Fort precinct still holds the city's grand Victorian civic buildings. The suburbs extend north across Salsette island, so a journey between the two ends is measured in neighbourhoods and traffic rather than kilometres. Three UNESCO World Heritage listings are within reach of south Mumbai. Boats from the Gateway of India take about an hour to cross the harbour to Elephanta Island, where cave temples dedicated to Shiva are cut into the rock; the ferries do not run on Mondays.
