Ujjain is an ancient city in Madhya Pradesh on the banks of the Shipra. Its temple of Mahakaleshwar holds one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, described as the only south-facing, self-manifested Jyotirlinga, and the shrine sits below ground level. Every twelve years the city hosts the Simhastha, its Kumbh Mela, and in between it remains a steady draw for pilgrims coming to the temple and the river ghats. Mahabaleshwar is a hill station on a broad plateau of the Sahyadri range in Satara district, and its highest viewpoint, Wilson Point, reaches 1,439 metres. The British developed it as the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency. Old Mahabaleshwar, one of the villages that make up the town, is a place of pilgrimage because the Krishna and several of its tributaries are believed to rise there. In Old Mahabaleshwar, the Panchganga temple honours the traditional source of five rivers, the Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri and Gayatri, which flow from a carved stone cow's mouth.
