Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah I in 1411 beside the Sabarmati river, and in July 2017 its walled city became the first Indian city inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic core is made of pols, gated residential streets with bird feeders, wells and small shrines, packed closely together.
