Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah I in 1411 beside the Sabarmati river, and in July 2017 its walled city became the first Indian city inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around that old centre, a far larger modern city has spread across both banks of the river. Gandhi moved his ashram to the Sabarmati in June 1917, and on 12 March 1930 he left it on the Salt March to Dandi; the site is now a national monument.
