Goa is India's smallest state by area, a strip of the Konkan coast that stayed under Portuguese rule for about 451 years until December 1961. Panaji is the capital. The coastline offers very different kinds of beach, from the bustling shores of Baga and Calangute to the quieter sands of Palolem and Agonda, and the choice between them shapes a stay more than almost anything else. Old Goa holds the Churches and Convents of Goa, inscribed by UNESCO in 1986. Its best-known building, the Basilica of Bom Jesus, built between 1594 and 1605, keeps the remains of St Francis Xavier, the missionary who was based in Goa in the 1540s, and is regarded as a leading example of Portuguese colonial...
Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah I in 1411 beside the Sabarmati river, and in July 2017 its walled city became the first Indian city inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic core is made of pols, gated residential streets with bird feeders, wells and small shrines, packed closely together. Around that old centre, a far larger modern city has spread across both banks of the river. Gandhi moved his ashram to the Sabarmati in June 1917, and on 12 March 1930 he left it on the Salt March to Dandi; the site is now a national monument.
