Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is a dense harbour city on the Arabian Sea coast. Its southern part was once seven islands, merged by land reclamation over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the Fort precinct still holds the city's grand Victorian civic buildings. The suburbs extend north across Salsette island, so a journey between the two ends is measured in neighbourhoods and traffic rather than kilometres. Three UNESCO World Heritage listings are within reach of south Mumbai. Boats from the Gateway of India take about an hour to cross the harbour to Elephanta Island, where cave temples dedicated to Shiva are cut into the rock; the ferries do not run on Mondays.
Tuljapur is a hill town in Dharashiv district, formerly Osmanabad, about 45 km north-east of Solapur and set at around 648 metres in the Balaghat range. It grew around the temple of Tulja Bhavani, a form of the goddess Durga, built in the twelfth century by Maradadeva, a Mahamandaleshwara of the Kadamba dynasty. The goddess was the family deity of the Bhosale clan, to which Chhatrapati Shivaji belonged. The temple stands on Yamunachala hill near the Mandakini river and the Bori dam, and it is counted as one of the full Shakti Peethas among the three and a half in Maharashtra.
