Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is a dense harbour city on the Arabian Sea coast. Its southern part was once seven islands, merged by land reclamation over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the Fort precinct still holds the city's grand Victorian civic buildings. The suburbs extend north across Salsette island, so a journey between the two ends is measured in neighbourhoods and traffic rather than kilometres. Three UNESCO World Heritage listings are within reach of south Mumbai. Boats from the Gateway of India take about an hour to cross the harbour to Elephanta Island, where cave temples dedicated to Shiva are cut into the rock; the ferries do not run on Mondays.
Ujjain is an ancient city in Madhya Pradesh on the banks of the Shipra. Its temple of Mahakaleshwar holds one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, described as the only south-facing, self-manifested Jyotirlinga, and the shrine sits below ground level. Every twelve years the city hosts the Simhastha, its Kumbh Mela, and in between it remains a steady draw for pilgrims coming to the temple and the river ghats. The Bhasma Aarti, held before dawn at Mahakaleshwar, is the ritual most visitors hope to attend, and places are booked through the official website of the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee. Around the temple, the Mahakal Lok corridor has been laid out for pilgrims.
