Shirdi is a pilgrimage town in Rahata taluka of Ahilyanagar district, the district formerly called Ahmednagar, and almost everything in it turns on Sai Baba, the saint who lived here until his death on 15 October 1918. His devotees come from Hindu and Muslim backgrounds alike, and over the past century a small village has grown into a town arranged around the temple complex and the lodges and shops that serve its visitors. The Samadhi Mandir, built over the spot where Sai Baba's body was laid to rest, is the focus of worship. A short walk away, Dwarkamai is the mosque he lived in; its dhuni, a fire kept burning, is the source of the udi ash given to devotees.
Shegaon is a town in Buldhana district of Vidarbha, sacred to devotees of Gajanan Maharaj, a saint whose origins remain uncertain. He first appeared here as a young man, probably on 23 February 1878, and attained samadhi on 8 September 1910. His temple stands at the place of that samadhi, and the trust that runs it is the largest temple trust in Vidarbha, which is why Shegaon is called the Pandharpur of Vidarbha. Most of a visit centres on darshan at the samadhi temple and its morning and evening aartis, along with the weekly palkhi sohala.
