Tuljapur is a hill town in Dharashiv district, formerly Osmanabad, about 45 km north-east of Solapur and set at around 648 metres in the Balaghat range. It grew around the temple of Tulja Bhavani, a form of the goddess Durga, built in the twelfth century by Maradadeva, a Mahamandaleshwara of the Kadamba dynasty. The goddess was the family deity of the Bhosale clan, to which Chhatrapati Shivaji belonged. The temple stands on Yamunachala hill near the Mandakini river and the Bori dam, and it is counted as one of the full Shakti Peethas among the three and a half in Maharashtra.
Kolhapur stands on the banks of the Panchganga river in the southern part of Maharashtra, surrounded by the Sahyadri ranges. Its royal past is still visible in the New Palace, built between 1877 and 1884, which now houses the Shree Chhatrapati Shahu Museum. The city has a strong identity of its own, built on wrestling, Kolhapuri chappals and a fiercely spiced local cuisine with dishes found nowhere else in the state. The Mahalaxmi temple, known locally as Ambabai, is counted among the Shakti Peethas and anchors the old city. Rankala Lake is the evening walking spot, with boating and street food along its edge.
