Tuljapur is a hill town in Dharashiv district, formerly Osmanabad, about 45 km north-east of Solapur and set at around 648 metres in the Balaghat range. It grew around the temple of Tulja Bhavani, a form of the goddess Durga, built in the twelfth century by Maradadeva, a Mahamandaleshwara of the Kadamba dynasty. The goddess was the family deity of the Bhosale clan, to which Chhatrapati Shivaji belonged. The temple stands on Yamunachala hill near the Mandakini river and the Bori dam, and it is counted as one of the full Shakti Peethas among the three and a half in Maharashtra.
Mahabaleshwar is a hill station on a broad plateau of the Sahyadri range in Satara district, and its highest viewpoint, Wilson Point, reaches 1,439 metres. The British developed it as the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency. Old Mahabaleshwar, one of the villages that make up the town, is a place of pilgrimage because the Krishna and several of its tributaries are believed to rise there. In Old Mahabaleshwar, the Panchganga temple honours the traditional source of five rivers, the Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri and Gayatri, which flow from a carved stone cow's mouth. Venna Lake near the town has boating, and viewpoints such as Arthur's Seat and Kate's Point look down into deep valleys.
