Tuljapur is a hill town in Dharashiv district, formerly Osmanabad, about 45 km north-east of Solapur and set at around 648 metres in the Balaghat range. It grew around the temple of Tulja Bhavani, a form of the goddess Durga, built in the twelfth century by Maradadeva, a Mahamandaleshwara of the Kadamba dynasty. The goddess was the family deity of the Bhosale clan, to which Chhatrapati Shivaji belonged. The temple stands on Yamunachala hill near the Mandakini river and the Bori dam, and it is counted as one of the full Shakti Peethas among the three and a half in Maharashtra.
Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah I in 1411 beside the Sabarmati river, and in July 2017 its walled city became the first Indian city inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic core is made of pols, gated residential streets with bird feeders, wells and small shrines, packed closely together. Around that old centre, a far larger modern city has spread across both banks of the river. Gandhi moved his ashram to the Sabarmati in June 1917, and on 12 March 1930 he left it on the Salt March to Dandi; the site is now a national monument.
